Here is today’s featured foundation.
Appalachian Fund (at Berea College)
Website: https://www.berea.edu/appalachian-fund/ (Note: This is a fund at Berea College, not a separate foundation, but it functions as a public grantmaker).
Mission & Purpose: To improve the general education, health, and well-being of people living in the Appalachian Mountains. The fund is dedicated to uplifting students, families, and communities throughout the region.
Broad Funding Guidelines: Grantmaking is focused on the Appalachian region as defined by the college. This fund is unique in that its primary grant program is for current Berea College students. It provides small grants (up to $250) to students in good standing for supplemental educational experiences related to Appalachia, such as attending a conference, traveling for research, or buying supplies for a course project.
Featured Opportunity: The "LJAC Special Student Funding" is the fund's main public opportunity. It is designed to remove small financial barriers that would otherwise prevent a Berea student from pursuing a specific educational experience related to their Appalachian studies or personal pursuits.
Recommendation: Current Berea College students in good standing who need a small amount of funding (under $250) for a specific, one-time educational experience related to Appalachian studies, such as travel to a regional conference or supplies for a research project.
