Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

  • Mission and Purpose: The foundation's mission is to create a world where every person has the opportunity to live a healthy, productive life. It focuses on global health and development, including efforts to combat poverty, disease, and inequity around the world.

  • Broad Funding Guidelines: The Gates Foundation primarily provides funding through committed grants to organizations that align with its strategic priorities. It does not accept unsolicited proposals and directly solicits organizations it believes are well-suited for a particular project. It focuses on large-scale, measurable impact and uses a multi-phase process for developing grants, including due diligence and risk assessment. The foundation is prohibited from funding lobbying or political campaign activities.

The Ford Foundation

  • Mission and Purpose: The Ford Foundation's mission is to reduce inequality. It invests in individuals, ideas, and institutions that address the underlying drivers of inequality globally, with a focus on social justice and human rights.

  • Broad Funding Guidelines: The foundation's grantmaking is primarily proactive, and it does not accept unsolicited grant proposals via mail, email, or phone. It funds a range of organizations worldwide that align with its programs. The foundation's support can include general operating support (core support funding), program/project support, and investments in social enterprises. Grants are made to U.S. 501(c)(3) organizations and other tax-exempt entities, and all funds must be used for charitable, educational, or scientific purposes in compliance with U.S. tax law.

Connelly Foundation

  • Mission and Purpose: Inspired by its Catholic heritage, the Connelly Foundation's mission is to improve the quality of life in the Philadelphia region. It supports charitable organizations that strengthen resilience and help people flourish through investments in education, human services, arts and culture, and civic life.

  • Broad Funding Guidelines: The foundation is a "place-based" funder, with most of its support directed toward nonprofits in Philadelphia, the surrounding Pennsylvania counties (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery), and the city of Camden, New Jersey. It supports organizations with strong leadership and well-defined goals, and it prefers to support endeavors with multiple funding sources. It offers general operating support, program/project grants, and capital support. The foundation does not fund advocacy, annual appeals, charter or public schools (with limited exceptions), or health initiatives, among other things. It does not accept unsolicited requests of $100,000 or more.
